Headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canshale is a private Canadian company, whose principals have a proven record of developing large-scale, non-conventional resource projects. Our team’s experience includes mining and exploration development, finance and administration, and project design and execution.


Christopher Hopkins MBA, BSc, CEO

Christopher is a management professional, explorationist and businessman with over 40 years of Canadian energy and mining experience. Over the last 20 years, his projects have unlocked value in major, unconventional resources in forgotten and previously unexplored areas of western Canada. In 2010 he founded Canshale Corp., focusing on an oil shale resource he had previously acquired. Prior thereto, he was the founder, CEO and President of Oilsands Quest Inc. (NYSE AMEX: BQI), which pioneered Saskatchewan’s oil sands industry and was sold to Cenovus; he was a founder and Executive Vice President of Synenco Energy Inc. (TSX:SYN), a successful Canadian oil sands exploration and development company sold to Sinopec/Total; and he was a founder and Vice President of Thunder Road Resources Ltd. (1994 to 1999), a private oil and gas production company focused on Alberta’s Cardium oil. He has held senior environmental control and corporate finance positions in the Canadian resource sector (1975-1994), including Suncor, Pembina and Amoco Canada.

Christopher Yellowega P.Eng., President & COO

Chris is a professional engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the resource development industry. From 2016: President and CEO of Canshale Corp.; CEO of Northern Frontier Corp. (TSX-V:FFF), 2013 to 2016; VP Operations for North American Energy Partners, 2008 to 2013; VP Upstream for Synenco Energy, 2005 to 2008; and senior manager positions with Shell Oilsands. In successful, unconventional energy projects producing hundreds of thousands of barrels per day with values over $10 billion, Chris has been the lead person in charge of project development, construction strategy, commissioning/start-up, operations and de-bottlenecking.

Nick Pohorelic CPA, CA, CFO

As a founder of Canshale, Nick established the company’s control systems, accounting systems, financial relationships, and closed the initial and all subsequent financings. Working with the executive team, he developed and is responsible for the implementation of the business plan and budgets for Canshale. Prior thereto, Nick served as CFO for two separate public oilfield service companies (1997 to 2008), responsible for closing their initial public offerings. He served as a senior financial consultant to one of Canada’s largest oil well drilling companies during their IPO process. His financial career commenced with 11 years of public practice with a Big Four accounting firm (1986 to 1997).

He has held senior environmental control and corporate finance positions in the Canadian resource sector (1975-1994).

Thomas Milne, Parksville, BC, Canada

Director since January 2010

Retired. Director of Canshale since January 2010, he has served on numerous Canadian and international energy, telecommunications and industrial company boards, including Oilsands Quest (Lead independent director) and Synenco Energy. He was Treasurer for NOVA Corp. (1985 to 1997). He has extensive international experience in United Kingdom, China, Sudan, Chile, Kazakhstan and United States.

Michael Supple, Calgary, AB, Canada

Director since April 2012

Retired. Co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Synenco Energy Inc. from 1999 to 2008. Retired in 2008. Executive Vice President, Suncor Energy Inc (1974 to 1994). Prior thereto, executive roles for several international energy companies.

Randy Koroluk, Calgary, AB, Canada

President of Alcor Facilities Management Inc., a company providing services to the oil sands sector from 2007 to present. Prior thereto, founder and president of successful businesses in Fort McMurray, Alberta including President, Air Mikisew, an aboriginal-owned regional airline.
